Urgent Search for Missing British Hiker George Smyth in Romanian Mountains - Latest Updates (2025)

A young man's solo adventure in the Romanian mountains has turned into a desperate search, leaving his family and community anxiously awaiting news.

For over a week, the Bucegi Mountains in Romania have been the site of an intensive search for 18-year-old George Smyth, a University of Bristol student from Shropshire, England. The young man went missing while hiking, sparking a race against time and the elements.

George, an adventurous and loving individual, embarked on this solo hiking trip, a detail that has added to the family's concern, as he did not inform them of his plans. He was last seen on November 23rd, and the search efforts, led by the Brașov Mountain Rescue, have been ongoing since.

He had set off from Poiana Brașov, heading towards Bran, the location of the famous Dracula's castle. During his hike, George reached Tiganesti, where he made a distress call via the emergency number 112. According to Sebastian Marinescu from the local mountain rescue service, George was disoriented, exhausted, and showing signs of hypothermia. The weather conditions were extreme, with strong winds, heavy snowfall, and dense fog, making the mountainous terrain treacherous.

Mountain rescue teams advised him to retrace his steps and keep moving to combat the effects of hypothermia.

But here's where it gets controversial... The rescue team is puzzled as to why he continued forward, especially considering the early onset of darkness at around 5 p.m. during this time of year.

Despite the difficult conditions, over 50 mountain rescuers, along with a canine unit, drones, and helicopters, have been involved in the search. Sadly, the only item found so far is George's backpack. After seven days, the search was temporarily suspended due to the risk of avalanches, but the rescue service remains committed to finding George.

His mother, Jo Smyth, has expressed the family's heartbreak, stating that the thought of life without him is unbearable. She has traveled to Romania to support the search efforts. She mentioned that George had kept the trip a secret to prevent his family from worrying.

George's rugby club in Newport, Shropshire, has also expressed their deep concern and support, remembering him as a much-loved member who was active in coaching younger players. The University of Bristol and the Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office are also providing support.

And this is the part most people miss... The family is urging anyone with information to come forward.
