Empowering Lives: STEP's Impact on Disability Employment

It's a powerful thing to see individuals not just surviving, but thriving, and that's precisely what Support, Training, and Employment (STEP) is making happen for people with disabilities. In honor of National Disability Employment Awareness Month, let's dive into how STEP is changing lives and fostering inclusivity in the workforce.

STEP, under the leadership of Executive Director Heidi Smith, offers a diverse range of employment support services. They collaborate with Medicaid waiver referrals, Vocational Rehabilitation Services, and other avenues to connect individuals with disabilities to meaningful work. These opportunities include direct hires, where STEP provides job coaches for ongoing support; crew jobs, where STEP contracts with companies to manage entire work crews; and pre-employment programs that allow individuals to develop skills through project-based work, earning minimum wage while they learn.

The Personalized Approach

STEP's Intake and Compliance Manager, LilyAnn Berg, highlights the personalized approach they take. They conduct in-depth interviews with individuals, their families, and caregivers to understand their interests and aspirations. They also facilitate job trials, allowing individuals to explore different roles in the community. This person-centered approach ensures that individuals are matched with jobs they genuinely enjoy.

A History of Success

With around 65 years of experience, STEP has built strong relationships within the Fairmont area. STEP Employment Director Abby McFarland emphasizes how these connections benefit individuals seeking employment. For example, if someone is passionate about animals, STEP might reach out to the Humane Society to arrange a work trial. This proactive approach helps individuals find roles that align with their interests.

Impressive Growth and Impact

STEP currently supports 150 individuals across Martin, Faribault, Watonwan, and Blue Earth counties, with 110 of those in Martin County. The number of people served has doubled since the COVID-19 pandemic, a testament to the growing need and STEP's expanding reach.

Building a Strong Reputation

Heidi Smith notes that STEP's positive reputation has been instrumental in their success. Their commitment to providing ongoing support helps ease any concerns employers might have about hiring individuals with disabilities. This extra support can be crucial in creating a welcoming environment for everyone.

Expanding the Team

STEP has also significantly increased its workforce. Since Smith joined in June 2023, the team has grown from 45 to 85 staff members, demonstrating the organization's rapid growth and commitment to serving more people.

Abby McFarland emphasizes that employment helps individuals with disabilities find purpose, build social connections, and experience a sense of belonging. It's about empowering them to do what they enjoy and feel like they are part of something bigger.

Upcoming Event

STEP will host a business after-hours event on October 30th at their new location on 304 Downtown Plaza. This event will allow people to learn more about STEP's services and meet the staff and individuals they serve.

Spreading Awareness

During National Disability Employment Awareness Month, and throughout the year, STEP actively works to raise awareness and promote inclusive employment practices.
